I'm a full-time realtor, not a photographer, but the photos are from my family trips in the area, where we explore neighborhoods and local parks while watching the leaves turn color. These photos reflect my personal connection and experience in the local community.

Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area

One of the most beloved places to enjoy fall is Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in nearby Blue Springs. It’s a favorite for locals who want to slow down and immerse themselves in nature. The Bethany Falls Trail offers a short (but vibrant!) walk, winding through dense woods filled with maples, oaks, and hickories. We recommend going just after sunrise to catch the soft morning light filtering through the leaves; it feels like walking through a painting. Pro tip: pack a picnic, because once you get there, you’ll want to stay!

Longview Lake

Longview Lake offers the perfect combination of water and color, with the fiery leaves reflecting off the lake like a mirror on calm days. A leisurely drive around the shoreline is relaxing enough, but the Longview Trail is ideal for a long walk or bike ride if you're looking for a workout with a view. A thermos of coffee, a lakeside bench, and an hour of quiet? That’s fall bliss right there.

Prairie Lee Lake

Prairie Lee Lake isn’t just a spot for boating and fishing, but an understated nature spot surrounded by mature trees that burst into color every autumn. The area features woods with trails surrounding the lake, offering a fall experience that feels intimate and serene. Pro tip: stroll or drive along paths that hug the shoreline; every bend offers a new lighting or color combo moment.

Legacy Park & Waterfall Park

If you’re looking for something simple and close, Legacy Park and Waterfall Park are perfect for a quick afternoon outing, offering open spaces dotted with vibrant trees and trails that are easy to navigate. Children can enjoy the various playgrounds throughout the parks, while adults will appreciate the spectacular scenery. Waterfall Park especially shines in the evening light, when the trees glow warm and golden.

A Little Outside of Lee’s Summit

Maple Woods Natural Area

For a true maple forest experience, take the short trip north to Maple Woods Natural Area in Gladstone, where the entire area turns into a fiery sea of orange and red when the sugar maples reach peak color in mid-October. It’s compact enough to visit in under an hour, so you can pair it with lunch or shopping nearby. Just be sure to wear good shoes, as the trails can get muddy after a fall rainstorm.

Knob Noster State Park

If you’re in the mood for a longer drive, Knob Noster State Park (east of Lee’s Summit) offers quiet hiking trails through oak and hickory forests. These beautiful woods are less crowded than the popular spots closer to the city, making them perfect for those who want to truly soak in the sounds of crunching leaves and the rustling wind through the trees. The Bison Trail gives you a little bit of everything: forest, prairie, and streams glowing under the autumn sun.

Loose Park & Country Club Plaza

For something with a little more city flair, head into Kansas City to Loose Park and the Country Club Plaza. Loose Park is one of the prettiest green spaces in the metro, featuring huge oak and maple trees that blaze with color in October. Pair it with a stroll through the Plaza, where the Spanish-style architecture and fountains look especially charming framed by autumn leaves. For a fall day done right, grab a latte, wander the shops, and end the day with a walk through the park.

When Should You Go?

Missouri’s fall color season usually peaks in mid-October, though you’ll start seeing changes as early as late September. By early November, most of the leaves will have fallen to the ground, but weather plays a big role in the show; dry, sunny days followed by cool nights bring out the brightest colors.
To make the most of your autumn adventure, remember a few tricks:

  1. Go early in the morning or just before sunset for the best light (and fewer crowds).
  2. Dress in layers. Missouri fall weather can change by the hour!
  3. Mix things up with a scenic drive one day and a hike the next.
  4. If you really want to embrace the season, pair your outing with a local fall festival, pumpkin patch, or cider stop.

Bottom Line

Lee’s Summit and the surrounding communities truly shine in the fall. Whether you’re wandering the trails at Burr Oak, cruising around Longview Lake, or enjoying a city stroll through Loose Park, you’ll find plenty of ways to celebrate the season.
